The Focus of Our Project

Hello, Caregiver’s Cup attendees! We’re happy you’re here, and we’d like to share a bit of the vision we have for this documentary beyond what we have shared in our flyer. It’s our belief that cannabis criminalization is not long for this country – full legalization, taxation, and regulation is on the California ballot in 2010 (and presently enjoys majority support), and other states will be hard-pressed not to at least consider the measure for themselves when they see the potential for tax revenue. For this reason, now is the time to consider what this means for the future, both long-term and immediate – this is why we appreciate not only the passion that we saw, but also the support and the desire to contribute to the project from so many of you today.

Our first goal is one of projection – we’ll look at the effects cannabis legalization will have on our economy, our society, and our way of life. What present-day industries are most likely to be interested in profiting from the sale of cannabis? How will this new marketplace look – is it relatively self-regulating, or is it prone to abuse? What happens to present-day cannabis-producing operations – will they have a place in the market? Will hard drug use increase or decrease? Will gang and cartel activity escalate or depreciate?

Not only will we theorize how a world with legal cannabis will look, but we find it especially important that the implementation of legalization is approached with a sensible mindset. State and federal governments will face many challenges in undertaking this initiative, so we must make our voices loud to ensure the endeavor succeeds the first time. What legal restrictions, for example, should be in place on the sale of cannabis? What existing government agencies should be involved – or should new ones be established for this purpose? Should cannabis be taxed? If so, should it pay for an earmarked purpose or for general government business?

This is only the start of our path – a lot of consideration, conversation, research, and hard work lies ahead. This project is only about a week old, and is moving ahead at full speed – but we can’t make a documentary without support from the public. If you feel you can contribute to this project with insight on any of these topics, or any we haven’t thought of to this point, please get in contact with us – we’d love to hear your ideas.
